Dental surgery

For quick recovery after dental surgery at Tamarack Dental Associates, follow surgical instructions below regarding dental implants and tooth extractions. Contact us if you have any further questions or concerns on proper care.

After dental implant surgery, it takes some time for the implant to integrate with the bone and tissue. Do not touch the wound, don’t rinse, spit, or touch your mouth within 24 hours after surgery. Take antibiotics as prescribed and use a gauze for bleeding. For pain, Tylenol, Aleve, or ibuprofen can be used. Eat soft foods and stay hydrated.

Don’t brush the dental implant since it is still healing. Swelling may occur, which is normal. Use ice and elevate your head. If you wear a dental prosthesis, night guards, dentures, or retainers, do not wear them 10 days after surgery. Do not smoke at least 2 weeks after the procedure, as doing so could increase infection.

  • Don’t touch the affected area

  • Use ice packs

  • Take prescription medicine

  • Eat soft foods

  • Drink fluids (not through a straw)

Tooth extraction recovery tips

You may need teeth extracted because of tooth decay or because they are hindering your orthodontic treatment or wisdom teeth. Aftercare is very important so recovery is smooth.

Keep pressure on the treated area, change the gauze, keep your head elevated, rinse your mouth with warm salt water every 1 to 2 hours and 48 hours after surgery, and avoid smoking 3 to 4 days after your procedure because it could increase your chances of infection

You could experience complications that include bleeding, bone sequestra (dead tooth fragments), dry socket, light-headedness, numbness, swelling, and trismus (difficulty opening and closing your mouth).
